AJ Johannes PhD, PE
Professor
Mathematical Modeling
B.S., 1970, Physics and Chemistry, Illinois State University
M.S.E., 1974, Civil Engineering, West Virginia University
Ph.D., 1977, Chemical Engineering, University of Kentucky
Dr. AJ, as he is called by his
students, has perhaps the most varied background of all the
faculty at OSU. After receiving undergraduate degrees in
Chemistry and Physics and teaching high school for a year, he
spent two years working as an environmental engineer for the US
Army. After being discharged, he attended West Virginia
University and got his master's degree in Civil Engineering and
the University of Kentucky where he got his Ph.D. in Chemical
Engineering. In 1977, he became an Assistant Professor of
Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After
spending seven years at RPI, he joined Oklahoma State University and was
promoted to Full Professor in 1988.
Dr. AJ's area of research, as a result of his checkered
background, is mathematical modeling. Although most of his work
involves modeling in environmental engineering, he also does
research in combustion, CFD, corrosion and plasma reactor design.
Dr. AJ has taught a variety of courses, but most frequently he
teaches the junior-level Unit Operations courses, the
undergraduate Reaction Engineering, and a graduate course in Reactor Design and
Transport.
Dr. AJ enjoys the reputation of being the most
"unathletic" professor on the faculty. He hates bicycling, running, walking
and other forms of exercise. Instead, he contends that his interests are more
cerebral in nature. He loves to play on his personal computer, read mystery
stories and play games. He is a Life Master bridge player and is accomplished at
chess, GO and backgammon and enjoys playing Ultima Online.
